Surface Marker Buoy (SMB) Speciality

The Surface Marker Buoy (SMB) Course is designed to give an introduction and practical experience with SMB deployment using various reel, spools and buoy combinations.

On the SMB course run by Oxford Dive Centre you learn how to use various reels, spools and SMB’s and run through the various techniques and knowledge required for the safe deployment of a surface marker buoy.

This course introduced a key skill to have when diving in busy areas or on drift dives. Whether the buoy is acting as a “stay away, diver below” symbol for passing boats, or a visual marker on a drift dive so that your dive boat knows where to pick you up, the SMB course gives you a new and valuable skill allowing you to extend your underwater adventures.

An SMB can also provide a useful ascent line to help you and your buddy to ascend safely and complete your safety stops, as well as being useful for marking locations for mapping and search&recovery projects.

Through hands-on training during two scuba dives and some previous interactive learning, you'll learn:

  • when to use an SMB
  • the advantages and disadvantages of various types of lines and buoys
  • great techniques to safely and efficiently deploy an SMB
  • some potential risks of SMB use – and how to minimise them

All the equipment necessary for the course can be supplied by Oxford Dive Centre.
